New Zealand cricket legend Kane Williamson praised Shreyas Iyer after his unbeaten 97 runs in 42 balls led Punjab Kings beat Gujarat Titans by 11 runs on Tuesday away from home.
It was the first game of captain Iyer with Punjab, setting a massive total of 243 runs in 20 overs. The 30-year-old batsman came after Punjab lost their first wicket, making a sound impact.
Williamson was not picked by any side in the mega auction last year (IPL).
Hence, he is a part of the commentary team for Star Sports now (English India-only feed).
Williamson said: “As a leader, to step in at No. 3, set the tone, and take on the opposition’s biggest threats was remarkable. That innings was truly out of this world.”
Iyer, who played a great role in making India win the 2025 Champions Trophy early this month, led Kolkata Knight Riders to win the IPL 2024 title. However, he was not retained by KKR due to some international issues.
