Eden Gardens pitch curator Sujan Mukherjee has become one of the most hated personalities in Kolkata.
In the Indian Premier League 2025 opener, Mukherjee refused to make the spinner-friendly pitch asked by Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane.
Rahane’s side lost the game by seven wickets against Royal Challengers Bengaluru last Saturday.
However, Mukherjee did tell the Indian media that nobody asked to make a spin-friendly wicket from KKR’s side. He even added that RCB spinners worked better than KKR and it was the core reason behind this defeat.
He told Sports Tak: “No official or player ever inquired about the pitch requirements for the first match. During practice, a coach asked me about the pitch’s behavior, and I told him it would turn and be good for batting.”
Mukherjee added: “I never refused anything to KKR. Our relationship has always been strong. I prepared the pitch in accordance with BCCI guidelines. Those accusing me are completely uninformed.”
Eden Gardens is the home of KKR, and looking beside this stadium seems impossible for the three-time IPL champions. As there are a host of games to be played in 2025 at the Eden Gardens, Rahane and Mukherjee have to come on the same page.
