Punjab Kings started the 2025 Indian Premier League season with a crucial 11-run victory over Gujarat Titans on Tuesday (March 25) at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
It was also the debut of new captain Shreyas Iyer for Punjab. The 30-year-old batsman scored an unbeaten 97 runs in just 42 deliveries, helping his side to set a massive target of 244 for Gujarat to chase.
Iyer’s side scored 243 runs at the cost of five wickets in 20 overs. Other than Iyar, Priyansh Arya (47 runs) and Shashank Singh (44*) also contributed with the bat well. Shashank even added 44 runs in just 16 balls.
Singh even revealed after the game that Iyer told him to play for the team rather than thinking about his century.
Shashank said: “From ball one, Shreyas said don’t worry about my hundred.”
Punjab set the mega total despite star T20 all-arounder Glenn Maxwell getting out in the very first ball he faced (golden duck).
However, Marcus Stoinis did add 20 runs but took 15 deliveries.
But even the Gujarat Titans did not play that bad with the bat. The top-order did perform well for them. Opener Sai Sudarshan added a crucial 74 runs in 41 balls. Even the captain Shubman Gill scored a quick 33 in 14 balls.
Jos Buttler (54) and Sherfane Rutherford (46) played well but lost the wickets from set positions. As a result, Punjab managed to keep them away from the winning target.
