The Rajasthan Royals did get a massive relief after winning their first match in the Indian Premier League 2025.
The 2008 IPL champions lost their opening three games in the absence of the regular captain Sanju Samson.
The visitors beat the Punjab Kings by 55 runs at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh.
As the Punjab Kings captain, Shreyas Iyer lost his first game (winning the opening two). The home side won the toss and picked to field first.
Sanju Samson’s 38 runs (26 balls) came as a good luck charm for RR and his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal, who blasted 67 runs before another youngster Ryan Parag played an unbeaten knock of 43 runs.
Along with other RR batters, it helped Parag put a total of 205/6 in 20 overs.
As the target of 201 was huge, Jofra Archer made no mistake. The England international took the wickets of impact player Priyansh Arya (golden duck) and then in-form Iyer. He later added Arshdeep Singh to his wicket hunt.
With Prabhasimran Singh and Marcus Stoinis failing with the bat, Nehal Wadhera’s 62 (runs) and Glenn Maxwell’s 30 tried to bring the momentum back.
But both of them lost wickets from a set position and made things next to impossible for the team to chase the total.
