Rohit Sharma, who leads India in Test and ODI formats, explains the reason behind not playing against Australia in the Sydney Test. It was the fifth match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which happened early in 2025.
As a result, Jasprit Bumrah led India in that game. Back then, it did seem that Rohit would retire from the Test format. However, he did tell the media soon about not going anywhere from the international stage.
In March 2025, Rohit led India to win the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai. After winning the mega event, he repeated that he does not want to retire from ODI and Test cricket.
In the 2024 summer, Rohit did take retirement from T20I after helping India win the World Cup (T20).
Explaining the Sydney Test situation, Rohit said on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast: “I have to be honest to myself, I wasn’t hitting the ball well – we somehow wanted Gill to play, he is such a good player, he missed out on the previous Test – I spoke to the coach, the selector – they kind of agreed, not agreed – you try to put the team first and what team wants, make the decision accordingly – that is how it goes.”
In the last one or two years, Rohit has not been as sharp as the fans expected with the bat. However, he still has played a key role with his leadership skills.
