For the first time as a captain, Rohit Sharma won an ICC event in 50 overs format as India beat New Zealand by four wickets in the 2025 Champions Trophy final at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.
India chased the 252 target set by New Zealand, who won the toss and picked to bat first. Rachin Ravindra started the innings in style, adding quick 37 runs in 29 deliveries.
But Kuldeep Yadav took two crucial wickets of Ravindra first and then Kane Williamson, who added just 11 runs.
But Daryl Mitchell did play well, scoring crucial 63 runs in 101 balls. He did get backing from Glenn Phillips’ 34 and Michael Bracewell’s 53 runs.
Indian openers set a good foundation, with Shubman Gill getting out after scoring 31 runs.
Things did get a bit tense for India when Virat Kohli got out after adding only one run. But Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer started to play well. Rohit was close to scoring a hundred but lost the wicket from the stable position by adding a match-winning 76 runs in 83 balls.
Axar Patel then made 29 runs in 40 balls but lost the wicket some overs later after Iyar’s dismissal.
However just like in the semi-finals against Australia, KL Rahul remained not out with 34 runs in 33 deliveries making India win the game. KL did make a small partnership with Hardik Pandya who added crucial 18 runs in 18 balls.
In the end, Ravindra Jadeja scored not out nine runs in six balls and led India to become the Champions Trophy winners.
