Ireland Cricket have made a strong, yet sad, statement by cancelling the multi-format series against Afghanistan due to financial issues. However, it has not impacted their England Men’s T20I and Zimbabwe Women’s series.
Men’s Future Tours Program (FTP) had Afghanistan playing a Test against Afghanistan. But they had plans to have the ODI and T20I series. But now the limited overs cricket, in the form of a series, would not take place.
Warren Deutrom, who is the Cricket Ireland chief executive, said that the series cancellation happened due to money-related issues.
Deutrom said to ESPNcricinfo: “One planned series that won’t go ahead for financial reasons is against Afghanistan. This decision is part of our management of short-term budgetary constraints, as well as our requirement to comply with the Board’s mandate to deliver balanced investment across the organisation’s strategic objectives.”
It is a fact that Afghanistan have taken better steps in cricket than Ireland, which are looking to co-host the 2030 World Cup with England and Scotland.
They are even planning to make a cricket stadium in Dublin.
He added: “Off the field, recent Programme for Government announcements will enable us to continue our planning for the new Dublin stadium and for the 2030 T20 World Cup, while we’re looking forward to announcing infrastructure and facilities investments across Ireland as part of our expanded Club Fund.”
