Sam Billings, who plays for the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League, was asked if the PSL is better than the Indian Premier League by a Pakistani sports reporter during a press conference.
Billings had played in the IPL for the Delhi Daredevils (2016-17), the Chennai Super Kings (2018-19) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (2022). However, he has not been picked since in the IPL.
This is also a reason, he is playing in the PSL. In 2025, the PSL is running around same time as the IPL.
Billings said: “You want me to say something silly? It’s hard to look past the IPL as the premier competition in the world, it’s very obvious, every other competition is just behind, you know in England we are trying to do the same like PSL as the second best competition in world, Big Bash too trying to do the same.”
Not just in cricket, the IPL is one of the top five sports leagues in the world. In the 21st century, there is no other sporting league that has become as big as the IPL in a short span. However, Pakistan players have been banned from playing in the IPL since 2009 due to geopolitical issues.
And just like India, cricket is the biggest sport in Pakistan. Hence, cricket stakeholders in Pakistan seem to be fighting against the cash-rich IPL. However, it is not even a debate in India at all.
